Mbatha, Azaria
Description: Azaria Mbatha was born in 1941 in rural Zululand in South Africa. Between 1963 and 1966 he studied at the Evangelical Lutheran Church Art and Craft Centre at Rorke's Drift, under Peter Gowenius. In 1966, Mbatha was awarded a scholarship to study at the Konst Jack Art School in Stockholm. He returned to South Africa in 1967 to teach at Rorke's Drift and stayed in South Africa until 1969, when he left to complete his formal education, obtaining a degree in Art and History and Social Science from University of Lund in Sweden, where he settled and where he exhibits regularly. He has received numerous awards for his art over his long career as an artist. Even after almost 30 years in Europe, Mbatha still feels close to his culture
