Memela, Sandile


Description:

Raised in Soweto, Sandile Memela is a prominent multi-award winning journalist, marketing analyst, media critic and columnist. He was an Acting Editor for the Sunday World from September 2003 until October 2004, when he was promoted to become the general manager of both the Sowetan and Sunday World newspapers. He declined hte post to take up the position of Chief Director of Marketing and Communication in the Department of Arts and Culture.

Although a well-known joournalist since 1985 when he started out, he is most celebrated and recognized for his thought-provoking article, "Mamelang" that provides insightful analysis on culture, politics and general society.

Memela was a finalist in Best Journalist of the Year in the Arts & Culture category of the Arts & Culture Trust Awards in 2004. In 1999, he won the same award and was simultaneously honoured by the Gauteng Provincial Government for his "Outstanding Contribution to Promoting the Arts".

He was a Hubert H. Humphrey at the School of Journalism, Maryland University in the United States in 1997 and is a former Thompson Foundation Fellow at the University of Cardiff, Wales.

He is the first black graduate of the Stellenbosch School of Journalism in 1986. Before then he obtained his English and Communication degree at Fort Hare University in 1984.

A major highlight of his life was when he, together with Professor Wole Soyinka and Andries Oliphant represented the African continent at "The White House Colloquial on Arts & Culture in the 21st Century" hosted by President Bill Clinton.

He lives in Vorna Valley, Midrand in South Africa.
