Ribane, Nakedi
Description: Born in Ga- Sekhukhuni and raised in Mamelodi outside Pretoria, Nakedi Ribane started her modeling career in the early 80’s and advanced quickly to become one of SA’s top and popular models of her era. She started her acting in the late 80’s whilst still a model and she’s been on local TV dramas like Molo Fish and international feature films including Ninja IV, Backlash and Waati
In 1989, after completing a speech and drama course in the UK, Nakedi co-founded and was the Director of the Siyazazi Modeling School with two fellow artists. The former model is constantly juggling jobs from being a fashion and beauty editor to TV presenter, grooming tutor to image consultant and a stylist. A short stint in 2 theatre productions in 2002 landed her FNB Best Supporting Actress award for her character as Noria in an adaptation of Zakes Mda’s novel “Ways of Dying”.
Her recent projects are first’s in Nakedi’s career. She wrote and produced a jazz dance show Siyavaya, which was staged at the State theatre in Pretoria dec 2005 and will be taking it down to Grahamstown Arts Festival in July, 2006.
Beauty…A Black Perspective, published by University of KwaZulu-Natal Press, is Nakedi’s first book. She started research on the book in 2003 shortly after leaving Tribute Magazine where she was the fashion and beauty editor. Her initial research for the book was around paying tribute to the pioneer beauty icons. During her research, she discovered that the issues of political and social environment had directly influenced the industry. Nakedi also found that laws like the group and mixed marriages acts never meant anything in model and beauty industry. Unfortunately, Nakedi feels that black beauty practitioners still haven’t made inroads into how the industry is being run today.
