Review by Cecil Abrahams, Fairleigh Dickinson University
ABPR Review
As a long time teacher of novels and plays of Zakes Mda, I agree with the authors that this is the first full length collection of critical essays on one of contemporary South Africa’s foremost novelists and playwrights. The book has eighteen chapters that attempt to cover as comprehensively as possible most of Mda’s writings. In several of these chapters there is joint authorship and in some cases there are different perspectives. It is a large book that includes illustrations, a useful select bibliography of Mda’s work and of some critics that have written on the writer’s productions. Most of those who have contributed to the collection are from South Africa and to some extent their critical reactions tend to be localized although at times more realistic.
