This book recounts the story of an extraordinary narrator and praise singer, Buzetsheni Mdletshe, Inyosi yaseNdlunkulu yeSilo, who worked with King Zwelithini for more than fifty years until the king’s passing in 2021. In telling his life story, combining memory and oral history, Mdletshe’s respect for African traditions comes through in his steadfastness in his role as inyosi and in the way that indigenous knowledge systems are intertwined with history and Zulu tradition. By reading this remarkable text, some portion of its wisdom, ingenuity and individuality will remain long after Mdletshe to touch us all and generations to come. Through all his experiences and life changes, be they historical, political, cultural and socio-economic, Mdletshe has maintained the traditions that were instilled by his forefathers.
