This timely work tackles one of South Africa’s most urgent and agonising issues: the question of why men keep raining down sexual and intimate violence on women and children – and also on each other.

Under Siege: Gender, Violence and Betrayal breaks new ground in its analysis of the deadly tangle of factors driving our sexual violence pandemic: socialisation, cultural practices, silence, shame, and the persistent ghosts of colonialism and apartheid. Not only is this one of the first discussions to grapple with male shame as a driver of violence, but this book also confronts how the government’s deep neglect of constitutional rights and basic infrastructure further enables violent practices and undermines survivors. This is especially true of areas such as Lusikisiki, the ‘rape capital’ of the country, and the area of focus for this study.
