Nyoka, Mtutuzeli
Description : Mtutuzeli Nyoka was born in 1960 in Uitenhage, in the Eastern Cape - the son of a medical practitioner and a nursing sister. He grew up in Port Elizabeth, matriculated in 1978 and went on to study medicine at the University of Natal, where he qualified as a medical doctor in 1984. He later specialised as an ENT surgeon and has been in private practice since 1993.
Dr. Nyoka started writing his novel in 1998. As he has always had a passion for history, he believed that the birth of the new democracy presented an opportunity to him to tell the stories he had witnessed and been a victim of, especially in the late 1970's and 1980's. In 1985, perhaps the bloodiest year in the history of South Africa's political struggles, Dr. Nyoka was an intern at the Livingstone Hospital, putting him in the forefront of the battle. He dealt with victims coming in, experienced the death of many people he knew well and although he succeeded at times to save lives, there were times he felt that he had failed.
Mtutuzeli Nyoka chose the town of Alice as a setting because of its rich history, including his own family ties to the town.
